TER software
an implementation of
CCSDS Recommendation for
Image Data Compression

TER is an implementation of the CCSDS Recommendation for Image Data Compression (Recommended Standard CCSDS 122.0-B-1 Blue Book). TER appears in the CCSDS list of available software . For more information about the standard visit the Documents site of the CCSDS Data Compression Working Group. There you will find, among others, the Recommended Standard and a set of test images.

TER implements not only the CCSDS Recommendation, but also new features added to the Recommended Standard. TER is designed and programmed with the aim to provide a good basis to test and develop the CCSDS Recommendation for Image Data Compression. In addition, TER-2.0 provides position, component, resolution, and quality scalability to the Recommended algorithm.

TER has been developed by the Group on Interactive Coding of Images (GICI) at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB). Our software can also be found in Sourceforge as the TER software project.

As BOI (a JPEG2000 implementation developed by our group) the name of the implementation honours a beautiful place of our country (in the same sense as Jasper or Kakadu). To be more precise, it is the name of a river in Catalonia that begins in the mountains of the Pyrenees, runs through the city of Girona, and dies in the Mediterranean Sea.

The application design allows the easy incorporation of new algorithms and compression techniques, providing a flexible framework to test new ideas inside the CCSDS Recommendation.

The GICI group encourages other researchers to use TER to test their own proposals. A user and a development manual are available and the API is well documented to facilitate the understanding, extension and modification of the application. All the design and implementation details are widely explained in these manuals saand the source code is well commented. TER is distributed with the General Public License (GNU GPL) of the Free Software Foundation (FSF).

We have tried to make a good design and efforts have been made to develop and implement the application as useful as desirable. However, we could not foresee all the needs of TER users, so we will thank you for all the suggestions and comments that you can report to us (GICI group).
We hope you enjoy it,
GICI group
